Our Guide to Celebrate National Dessert Day

Happy National Dessert Day! From Dutch banket and blueberry donuts to French macarons and classic ice cream sundaes, Holland has plenty of sweet treats worth celebrating. Check our top 5 local spots to satisfy your sweet tooth.

If you ever needed an excuse for something sweet, today is your day, it’s National Dessert Day. Whether you're looking for a classic Dutch pastry, a scoop of ice cream, or something a little more unexpected, the Holland area has no shortage of ways to satisfy your sweet tooth.

From longtime local favorites to newer downtown destinations, here are our top five desserts worth seeking out.

1. Apple Pie & Cider Treats – Crane's in the City

Crane's brings a little bit of the countryside into downtown Holland. Its desserts feature Michigan grown fruit, including classic apple and cherry pies and crisps. With the fall weather approaching, it's hard to beat the combination of an apple cider donut and a warm drink.

2. Blueberry Treats – Bowerman's

It's hard to talk about Holland's sweet side without mentioning blueberries. Bowerman's has turned the fruit into something of a local specialty, with blueberry donuts (our favorite), pies, parfaits, ice cream and other treats.

3. Banket – deBoer Bakkerij

For a taste of Holland's Dutch heritage, try banket, a flaky pastry traditionally filled with almond paste. deBoer Bakkerij has long been associated with Holland's Dutch baking tradition, making this a particularly fitting treat for visitors wanting something connected to the city's roots.

4. The Tommy Turtle – Captain Sundae

Some Holland traditions are best enjoyed with a spoon. Captain Sundae has been serving ice cream in Holland since 1980, and its signature Tommy Turtle Sundae is our favorite.

5. French Macarons – Le Bon Macaron

For something a little more elegant, head downtown for a French macaron. Le Bon Macaron offers a rotating selection of nearly 30 flavors each day, along with coffee, espresso and tea. It's a little detour that feels distinctly different from a traditional bakery experience.

Whether you're exploring downtown, heading toward the apple orchards or looking for a treat to take home, there's something sweet waiting around the corner.

What's your favorite Holland dessert? Tell us what we missed.
