Terri DeBoer Makes Final Pitch to 3rd District Voters With "Good Neighbors" Ad

Republican Terri DeBoer released a final video ad built on her 30 years of forecasting West Michigan weather. The ad caps a campaign that a voter publicly thanked for not "tearing down the other candidates."

Michigan's 3rd Congressional District, Republican Terri DeBoer posted a final campaign video to Facebook on Monday. The ad asks voters to trust her in Congress the way they trusted her to forecast the weather.

"I want you to vote for me for the same reasons you watched and trusted me to forecast the weather for all of those years," DeBoer says in the video. "Forecasting the storms that are on the horizon and doing what we can to help preserve and protect what makes this country so great."

DeBoer faces incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten and Green Party candidate Joe Jock on Tuesday's ballot, according to the Michigan Department of State's official candidate listing.

DeBoer posted the video from her verified Facebook page with the caption: "With less than 24-hours until the final vote will be cast this election, here's a reminder of why I'm running to represent Michigan's 3rd Congressional District. I want to protect and preserve the American dream for generations to come...including my six grandchildren."

In the ad, DeBoer walks downtown sidewalks, greets families and a veteran, and passes local storefronts, an ice cream stand and the lakeshore. She opens with: "For more than 30 years, I've had one of the best seats in the house here in West Michigan. I've watched storms roll across the lakefront. I've watched families gather on our beaches."

She goes on: "Now, it's our turn to keep our water clean, to keep our communities safe, to preserve the beauty that makes this place unlike anywhere else. Because protecting West Michigan isn't a government program. It's a shared responsibility. It's what good neighbors do."

The ad does not name or mention Scholten or any other candidate.

The closing ad repeats the theme DeBoer has used since her first general-election TV spot. That ad, titled "Trust," was announced Sept. 9. In the campaign's release, DeBoer said, "For thirty years, you trusted me to tell you the truth, and prepare you for the storms ahead," and added, "I'll work with either side to get results."

According to her campaign biography, DeBoer worked at WWMT-TV in Kalamazoo starting in 1990, joined WOOD-TV in 1995 and spent 28 years there. She returned to TV at FOX-17 in 2024. In 1996 she became the first woman in Michigan to earn the American Meteorological Society's Television Seal of Approval. She lives in Byron Center with her husband, Bill, and they have three children and six grandchildren.

Her website lists four priorities: affordable health care and patient choice, a strong economy and lower costs, reliable and affordable energy, and secure borders and safe communities.

DeBoer won the Aug. 4 Republican primary over Ryan Cushman, 54,241 votes to 14,804, or 78.6% to 21.4%, according to official state results.

The tone of DeBoer's campaign drew a public thank-you on Facebook this week from Nels J. Johnston. He wrote that he is "remaining completely neutral" and isn't saying how he will vote. He thanked her for campaigning "without constantly criticizing, attacking, or tearing down the other candidates."

DeBoer replied from her verified account:

"Thank you so much for your kind words. I have such respect for every person who has stepped forward to run for office. In this challenging process, I believe we can disagree without being mean and nasty to one another."

Polls in Michigan are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov.
