Allendale, Jenison, & Zeeland—Public School Board Meetings Tonight

APS is meeting on taxation, JPS will be looking to include abstinence in the Sex Ed curriculum, and ZPS is meeting on the budget.

There are three school board meetings happening across Ottawa County tonight. You can weigh in on the conversation by giving public comment. Or, if you can’t make it, you can send an email to your school board. There are links provided for each school to help you connect and prepare.

Allendale Public Schools

The first meeting is at 5:15pm for a Truth-In-Taxation/Budget Hearing. And then at 6:00pm, one of the items the board will vote on is an annual resolution establishing the tax rate for collection of property taxes. The debt millage will remain 12.0 mills which are 10.36 mills for the Qualified debt and 1.64 mills for the non-Qualified debt (2017 and 2020 bonds).

Worth noting from the May 12, 2025 APS school board meeting:
APS school board
voted to leave the MASB—Michigan Association of School Board. The majority who voted against remaining with MASB cited their decision was due to:

• The ideologies that MASB presents. Board Vice President Anna Hendricks said, “Their [MASB’s] resolutions include urging school media centers and classroom libraries to reflect the broader society and access to books reflecting sexual orientations gender identities and gender expressions.” She added that MASB talks about urging state legislative to create registration and a monitoring system on homeschoolers. In here opinion, families should have freedom to school their children without the oversight of government.

• Members who want to continue to take MASB classes may do so as a nonmember.

Jenison Public Schools

The meeting begins at 6:00pm and will include minutes from the SEAB (Sex Education Advisory Board) Hearing and Budget Hearing minutes. The SEAB is recommending that the 7th Grade Reproductive Health Curriculum include provisions for the teaching of abstinence in 7th grade. Also the SEAB is suggesting language updates to reflect medical terminology.

Zeeland Public Schools

The ZPS school board will meet at 6:00pm for a Truth-in-Budget Hearing. Immediately following, one of the items the school board will be voting on will be to approve millage rates.

Worth noting from the May 12, 2025 ZPS school board meeting:
ZPS’s attorneys, Miller Johnson, instructed the Zeeland school district to return to 2020 Title IX. The board agreed unanimously to follow 2020 Title IX.

As pointed out in a Hollander previous article, ZPS appeared to have 2024 Title IX references on the Title IX page of the district’s website. The district’s Title IX page has since been updated.

However, so far it seems there is still 2024 Title IX language (“gender identity” and “sexual orientation”) in the Discrimination and Harassment policy and in the Distribution of Information/Materials policy.

Whether or not you have kids in the school, there is value in attending school board meetings. These boards are making decisions that affect the community and influence our younger generations.
