Family Friendly Events—December

It’s that time of year—when inches of snow pile up in our driveways, and we don’t want to go anywhere. And while that’s the case for most of us, perhaps these events for the last month of the year will get us out from underneath our heated blankets and onto an ice rink.

Horse-Drawn Trolley Rides

December 5–6
Downtown Zeeland

This year during the Feel the Zeel of Christmas celebration, you will be able to travel down Main Street on a horse-drawn trolley. The tickets will be sold on-site at 4 pm each night of the celebration. For more information, visit the event site here.

Dutch Winterfest

December 2–6
Downtown Holland

Ever wonder what holiday celebrations are like in the Netherlands? Perhaps you won’t have to book a plane ticket to experience it. Here in our Holland, Dutch Winterfest will culminate the heritage and traditions as celebrated in Holland, Netherlands. From Sinterklaas festivities to cultural tastings, this event will capture the quintessence of a winter village set in the homeland—with a local twist. There are tickets available for specific events, so make sure to check out the website here.

Holidays on the Farm

December 11–12
Van Raalte Farm
Holland

If you’ve ever driven past a quaint yellow home atop the hill on 16th Street, you’ve definitely said, “Huh, I wonder what it looks like inside.” This holiday season, you’ll actually be able to step foot into the historic Van Raalte home. The trails surrounding the house will be illuminated with lights, the house will be decorated with themed trees in every room, and refreshments will be available. There will be crafts and other festive activities for the entire family to enjoy. There are non-refundable tickets available for this event.

Critter Barn’s Live Nativity

This year marks the 25th annual celebration of the live nativity put on by the Critter Barn. This event will capture the birth of Jesus, along with live animals, in a display of the Holy Land. There will be sheep, goats, cows, and donkeys… and a heated small animal barn. Tickets will be available for this event here.

Magic at the Mill

If you have kiddos at home who love a good light show, this event is for them. Holland’s DeZwaan windmill is brought to life by a thousand glittering LED tulips. It will feature a spectacle of synchronized lights—tulips dancing to the beat of music. The park and its shops will be open, and snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase. There will also be a moment for your kiddos to greet Sinterklaas. Make sure to purchase your tickets in advance here.

Delft Downtown

Downtown Holland

Ever wonder what an enlarged, life-sized ornament looks like? You can find out if you stroll Downtown Holland early this December. Local Tulip Time artists will transform oversized PVC ornaments inspired by blue-and-white Delft style. The twist? The colors of the iconic Delft are consistent, but its subject matter is expected to break from tradition. View this event here.

Holiday Kerstmarkt

November 21–December 20
Fridays, 3:00 pm–7:00 pm & Saturdays, 9:00 am–7:00 pm
Historic Civic Center Marketplace

This is basically the holiday version of the Downtown Farmer’s Market. Take a stroll and see local artisans showcase their handmade goods (and witness some festive cheer). There will be beverages to sip on such as hot spiced wine, hot cocoa, cider, festive punch, and more. Make sure to taste the Dutch Pigs in a Blanket or Stroopwafels. There will be one-of-a-kind artwork made by Dutch artisans. Make sure to take a look at this festive, rich local event.

Joyful Lights

November 25–January 4

Hudsonville Fairgrounds

In 2021, Jon Maust shared with his wife an idea of creating something truly heartwarming and magical for the surrounding local community that centered around the Christmas holiday. This began the conception of Joyful Lights—over a mile stretch of lights. This 30-minute experience features one million LED lights, synchronized displays, hidden elves, and more! You must register in order to attend.

New Year’s Eve Party

December 31st
9 pm–12:30 am
Tulyp Hotel

While it may be a far time from now, we all know the end of the year is approaching quickly. So, you best begin thinking of the ways you’ll celebrate. The Tulyp Hotel is hosting a New Year’s Party from 9 pm to 12:30 am featuring a selection of champagne toast, pizza, and assorted snacks. The tickets are $30 a person (seating is limited). This is an event for all ages. Guests who mention the event will receive a discounted hotel room for $150. For more details, visit the website here.
