Holland Public Schools is on the verge of a major identity shift. After decades of being known as the “Holland Dutch,” the district is considering a new mascot: the “Holland Fighting Pickles.”
The proposed change stems from a broader effort to better reflect the district’s increasingly diverse student body. District officials say the “Dutch” mascot, while a nod to the area’s historical roots, no longer represents the full spectrum of the community’s cultural identity.
In exploring new mascot options, the district looked to a different—but still deeply local—symbol: the pickle. Holland is home to the world’s largest pickle factory, and officials say the “Fighting Pickles” is a playful yet fitting tribute to the city’s industrial and cultural heritage.
Following an extended community engagement process that included student input, public forums, and online feedback, the Holland Public Schools Board of Education is scheduled to vote on the mascot change on April 28.
The district is encouraging continued community participation and conversation in the lead-up to the decision, inviting families to view concept designs of the potential new mascot and offer feedback.
If approved, the new mascot would be introduced in time for the 2025–2026 school year, marking the debut of the Holland Fighting Pickles on the field, court, and beyond.
On behalf of The Hollander Staff,
GO FIGHTING PICKLES!
