With July being prime blueberry picking month, you have until about the third week of August to enjoy this blue, delectable delicacy. With so many beautiful blueberry farms in Ottawa County, it’s hard to pick just one. Everyone seems to have a local favorite, and I’ve certainly found mine at Crossroads Blueberry Farm and Crossroads Blueberry Market.
“I love to see people exposed to our farm and enjoying Michigan blueberries. We have so much to offer," Dave Reenders, owner, said.
“We love that people from the community are enjoying local farms, be it ours or someone else’s.”
Crossroads Blueberry Market Did Not Disappoint
My drive started out innocently enough with one thing on the list, bulk blueberries. When I walked into the Crossroads Blueberry Market, my eyes seemed to be bigger than my stomach. Their market offers fresh Michigan blueberries, seasonal fruits, gourmet Michigan blueberry items, fresh baked goods, and ice cream and frozen yogurt with a full topping bar. The Wildberry Smoothie is a must have and a favorite in my household.
How Crossroads Blueberry Farm Began
Crossroads Blueberry Farm is a family-owned business operated by Dave and Kelley Reenders. Dave had been farming blueberries his entire life, alongside his father, Marvin Reenders. In 2000, Dave and Kelley decided to start Crossroads.
Over the past 16 years the business has expanded from 100 to 450 acres of Michigan blueberries, primarily being sold as wholesale fruit.
“After our second oldest daughter, Amber, graduated from Calvin College and showed interest in being part of the family business, we decided to expand to retail business and expand to a retail market,” Kelley said. “This marked the beginning of Crossroads Blueberry Market. Four years later, Amber’s husband Luke joined the family business, and we are really excited to have the next generation take over at the farm.”
Support Local Farmers
With a mission to provide the best quality fruit to their customers while being good stewards of the land, Dave is optimistic the community will continue to support their farming endeavors.
“I hope that the local people and people in this country recognize what the American farmer does for America,” Dave said, “and that they continue to support local and U.S. farmers.”
Yes, support your local farmers and take a leisurely drive to Crossroads. It will not disappoint.
